MediaWatch
AAJA-MN on Nov. 8 sent a letter to WCCO in Minneapolis asking for an apology and correction or retraction regarding an inaccurate report that aired Oct. 31, 2011, which said a Minnesota puppy mill was allegedly sending dogs to a Chinatown meat market in New York City.

Read AAJA-MN's letter here. The Minnesota Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists stands with AAJA-MN; the group sent its own letter on Nov. 9.

On Nov. 15, after receiving no response from WCCO, AAJA National sent a letter to CBS, asking for an explanation.

UPDATE: On Nov. 23, WCCO published an Editor's Note on its website addressing the dog/duck error. AAJA Minnesota leadership released a statement in response to this note.

Chapter of the year

Picture
AAJA-MN is the 2011 AAJA chapter of the year!

Congrats and a BIG thank you to all of our chapter members for their hard work!

From Emma Carew, chapter co-president:

"We're proud to return from the Detroit convention as the AAJA chapter of the year. We also saw past president Thomas Lee, newly returned Star Tribune reporter, elected as national vice president for print.

When we sent our nomination, we realized the size of the impact our small chapter has had this year. Among the highlights: Taste of AAJA 2010, a fundraiser that met our goals and also introduced our first leadership in diversity award; new leadership on the AAJA board; partnerships with SPJ and Twin Cities Black Journalists for better programming, such as the Google meetup; launching a newly redesigned website; our commitment to students: Spotlight Awards, AAJA internship, two Minnesota students on Voices staff and another on JCamp this year; a robust Media Watch program that gave a strong response when challenged on the Hmong parody song earlier this year.

I attended my first national presidents meeting at the convention this year, and hearing others talk about their struggles in markets around the country, I learned that our chapter is well organized, our programs are effective and our members are reliable. I'm incredibly proud to be a part of our leadership in Minnesota.

We'd love to continue to be an outstanding chapter. Please get in touch if you'd like to volunteer, pitch a programming idea or just come to a board meeting."
